New Vid! Angel/Spike

RHPS-enter
Or, The Cup of Perpetual Torment just served to bring it all up to the surface.

Roseability: noun. [<rose + -ability.] Note: Neologism coined by Idlewild in the song "Roseability," in reference to Gertrude Stein's observation that "a rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." Definition: Able to rose.

Yeah, make of that what you will.

Thank you, as always, to elynross for betaing and listening to me go on and on, and finally buying it. Thank you, absolutedestiny, for the context-free viewing and criticism. I appreciate your comments very much. Also, much thanks to my friends who cheered me on. Y'all know who you are, and I love you guys.

I was thinking of dedicating this vid to any number of Angel/Spike fans (you know who you are!), but I think? This one is for me. :) With love. [dies laughing]

Feedback is always appreciated!

I loved this. I don't have a lot thinky to see after watching it just twice, but my first impression is this sense of this is just how Spike is and how Angel is and how they fight and it doesn't really matter why (destiny, Dru, Buffy, power), they just will. But it's so much them that it's not really fighting, it's just them interacting, because they come back together to this fundamental connection between them, even when their roles shift (and how complicated *is* their relationship, anyway?). That moment at about 1:43 when Spike launches himself at Angel when the music picks up again, that was fantastic.

I'm very glad you gave that definition. I would have been able to follow the relationship and general gist, but knowing what the word is referring to gives me some extra perspective.

I'm surprised at just how hard a focus you were able to place on their...interaction? The thing that isn't either of them singly, but seems to exist independent of what they want? Ok, that makes no sense. Uhm, that thing that makes them Spike and Angel. ::gestures helplessly::

I think you focused on it by crossing out, metaphorically, all of the other aspects. Dru, Buffy, the cup, and not focusing on who they were other than defined by their interactions. It's very cool. It's like putting the spotlight on their energy, rather than them.

It's at about the minute mark when the first chorus comes in that the intent (or what I'm reading as it) really starts to unfurl for me. And then it kicks up another level when Spike crashes into Angel by the cup, and again with the wire and knight-fight.

I'm really going to have to sit and let the implications of those chorus lines roll around in my head for a while. They're so clearly stuck with each other regardless of whatever they've *ever* wanted.

And "dissatisfied" on Angel in bed, and the sequence with Spike raising his hand were a couple of my favorite special moments. :)

That's exactly what I did. No matter where they go, there they are, and they have to deal. That clip of Spike tackling Angel? I was *so* pleased with that. :)

I adored this! Wish I had enough of a brain left after today to say something more erudite than "whooooooooot" or "hell yeah", but that's my first reaction. Watched it three times one right after another to catch all the subtleties that are inherent in your work. The killer edits that capture split seconds that we miss when we blink.

Amazing stuff! Loved it!

Thank you so much for saying so! I've loved this song since the first time I heard it, nearly five years ago. I didn't realize it till the other day, but I think I *make* vids to be rewatched. :)

They most definitely are rewatched - trust me on this. Lost my drive on my old computer and what I mourned most was the loss of your videos! Saved all of them I could find on your site again and then have pestered Snow for some I couldn't locate.

Instant pick-me-ups --- they simply kick.ass.

*grins* Totally love it. Have watched it several times and I'm sure it'll be even more before I catch all the subtle things you have in this vid. Just wanted to post and say how flawless and gorgeous it is.

I'm not much for the Angel/Spike pairing but I'm able to see it, the complexity of it. And I think your vid caught it, in all it's glory.

*grins* I think it may be the non-A/S-shipper's shipper vid. Um, I like that description. And I think that's very true. I've re-watched it I don't know how many times and I can feel this silly grin steal over my face every time.

But then, I'm just a fangirl who adores your vids. You do the same with images and music that I attempt with words. You put certain actions and facial expressions that were captured on film to the music with just the right touch.

For example, the first image in your Putting Out Fire vid. The creepy music starts out with an image of the Wolfram & Hart sign, then segues into Angel's expression turning from mr. drunk guy to serious in City of. It's perfect. And I've seen you do it time and again.

Still waiting for it to download, very happily waiting . .. oops, here it is . .back in a moment . . .omigods---this is brilliant.

I think you still have a lot to say about Spike and Angel. And I want to see/hear more. This vid was just amazing. I watched it three times.

I loved the way you caught how they connect, no matter what, they connect and are connected. Entwined with one another.

I never imagined Spangel until just a month ago or so, but you are so illustrating Spangel.

I kept watching over and over for that moment in which they seemed to have touched hands and always just barely caught it. I think that was part of what you intended. To just barely catch it. Just as they just barely catch it. That they touch, deeply, but both want to deny it, but still they touch. Deeply.

They are part and each of one another. And your vid catches that connection.

Damn. I have no Buffy or Angel icons. Damn. I'm such an HL girl, but I so love Buffy and Angel. As seemingly so do you. Thank you, Lum. This was a brilliant vid.

I know that's not enough now....

Isn't that just the crux of it all? No matter what they have, what they want, its just not enough. Never will be. And the both KNOW it. Dissatisfied as humans. Dissatisfied as vampires. Poor bastards. Don't we just love them so?

And the cup falling on the discordant feedback? perfect.

Thank you! It's a wonder they're not tripping over each other more than they do, since they can't seem to pull out of each other's pockets. (heh, I said 'pull out'. I'm 12)

Roseability. Heh. A perfectly serviceable made up word. Like, say, effulgent?

Stop looking through scrapbooks and photograph albums

For all our boys long history, it's the prospect of the future that makes the 'ship work for me. Unlike the their respective relationships with Buffy, there's not this cloud of a doomed end that hangs over them. She was mortal and both their moral compasses for time, which could only end badly, I think. Where as Spike and Angel have already seen each other at their worst, and haven't managed to kill each other yet. Maybe if they look to their better natures, and common ground, it can only get better from here?

Thanks for the vid. You capture so many little moments perfectly.

Yes! I don't begrudge either one of them for Buffy, but when she's gone, they still have each other. Same for Wes.

Thank you for watching and letting me know you liked it. [squee!!]

OK, so I'm very tired and out of it but I watched your vid and I feel the need to babble in a complementary manner in your general direction.

I do like me some S/A vids that compress all the sex/violence/sex, but I really appreciated how this vid really seem to let the connection between them breathe if that makes sense. Because just as the rhythmn goes between past and present (I really liked the almost matching positions on those moments, btw, when, for example, William lunged forward into being Spike), there are also these beats in between. Which is just like their relationship--they go off and do separate things but come back together and are ultimately always connected.

And Jesus H. Christ, "Destiny" is a good ep. Um, yeah.

:) I hope it energized you!

I totally get what you're saying. I love the dance of violence, too. A lot. And I love to vid it. But I also love trying to show the near-connections that seem to catalyze the violence.

lmost matching positions on those moments, btw, when, for example, William lunged forward into being Spike)

I was *so pleased* with the timing of that. Thanks for noticing. :)

Okay, so I'm really picky when it comes to fanvids. And this is one of the strongest fanvids I've seen in a long time. The scenes you chose for each line in the lyric and your timing of the scenes are damm near perfect, the flashing of the images along with the beat is beautiful, and uh, wow.

My favorite part is towards the end, where you use the hand-holding scene in "A Hole in the World"; the way you had Angel and Spike jump apart the moment their hand touch really hit a part of me and made me think about their relationship. The moment is beautiful and it fits the underlining theme perfectly. ♥

My only issue was with you using too many scenes from "Destiny", but the way you cut and weave together each scene so that it became something different, instead of just a repeat of the episode set to lyrics is amazing. (And kudos to you for not using the Angelus/Spike kiss in "Innocence".)

Thank you for the lovely compliment. I'm so glad you took the time to write to me about it. I love that scene with them in the woods, too, because it does and says so much--there's history there, and trust and strength. And all it takes is a touch and a memory.

My only issue was with you using too many scenes from "Destiny",

I wish that wasn't an issue for you, because the vid is *about* that episode and why they reached that point and where they went from it. However, thank you so much for your feedback. I appreciate it!

I've hardly seen any of the canon you used for this vid, but wow, the themes came across so strong that that didn't matter. It took me a couple times watching it to really get it (and that definition is very helpful), but when I did--wow. Just the way you kept switching from the past to the present, how they're the same after *centuries*, still fighting the same battles, still restless, still part of each other. It's fascinating.

Downloaded this Saturday, but I had to run away to work. Finally watched it this morning and ... wow.

Right now I'm still pretty speechless. It is perfect. The music, the clips, the way you moved them all together like they were meant to be. Like it was supposed to be. Like it was.

Thank you so much, Lum. For working so hard on this and every vid you make, and for sharing your incredible talent with us.

Now. I need to go rewatch it a thousand few more times.

I'd love to be able to say something intelligent about this, but I just can't. It always seems as if there's something elemental about the connection between Spike and Angel and you caught that perfectly, as you always do. Thanks.

Thank you, Kathy. I think they have a very deep connection that isn't comfortable for either one of them, and it usually manifests in violence, one towards the other, but there's always *so much more!*

Oh Lum.

They can't teach you what you don't already know.

You make me miss them, so much. Damn. I loved the angles and blocking and how carefully they transistioned. Spike all growed up, but no one can teach him the things he already knew.

This is a fantastic vid. I loved the stills at the start, immediately setting up the theme and you kept pushing it through the entire video, keeping an incredibly tight focus all the time. Thank you for the definition of the word - that helped define the way I saw the vid. And of course given the definition, it made a lot of sense how you kept the clip choice quite "confined", in a sense, as though they are very much entangled in their own private world, and while all the outside factors come into play, they don't touch them at the fundamental level which they can do only to each other. Er... I hope that run-on sentence made sense. Anyway, I also thought the sense of dissatisfaction, despite all the endlessness of everything else between them, also comes through extremely well in this vid.

My favourite parts are the two bits where the music kicks in after a brief lull: Spike tackling Angel at 1:41 and Angel turning his head at 2:47. Oh, and also the cup rolling down in slow-mo as that beepy noise comes in at 2:20. That's just nifty. And maybe I'm just weird and fixated on detail, but I love Angel's little hand movement right before the cut at 2:42. :D My favourite thing, though, was how the composition had such a sense of symmetry to it. That was fabulous.

Thank you! I hadn't made an A/S vid before this one, and what I find most intriguing about them is their inability to just. walk. away. from each other. They're always in the other's face and business, and they're always exasperated with each other. But once they are both ensouled, they want the same things, and they want them *in the same way*. I think that the best and funniest thing is how badly they want to impress each other and look cavalier about doing it.

I'm so glad you noticed little things like the movement of Angel's hand. I can't discount those things when I'm laying out a vid. They're internal movement, and can be just as important (and obvious, but usually on a subconscious level) as the big drag-queen moves the they do. :)

Your vids are always amazing! It captures exactly what I loved about them in Season 5 - Spike & Angel together is just the way it's meant to be. They just understand each other in a way no one else does.

It's so hard to try and pick favorite parts, but I liked the cutting back & forth between them as Spike walks over and drinks from the cup, the little side glances on "I know that that's not enough", and the pause when they hold hands.

Thank you. I knew that I had a lot I wanted to say about Angel and Spike, but it was slashy on a more-than-enemies/less-than-lovers level. Once I got into the headspace of "they love/like/want each other, and the only way they're going to be able to touch each other is by beating the crap out of each other," the vid was a go.

They *are* intimate. All the time. That's what I dig about them, man! hee

I think my favorite thing about this vid is how you destroy the convention of telling a story from the series. It takes a lot of effort, because for real fans, even flashing a few images in sequence is enough for us to fill in the rest of the whole story arc.

But by INTENTIONALLY fragmenting the chronology, you make that impossible. And that forces me to just ... watch them interact.

It's a thing of beauty.
