New Vid! Adultery, Hannibal

Well, I'm at it again. This song has been in my directory for *years.* Finally, there's a fandom that works with it.  This is a Hannibal vid with Hannibal-esque imagery (which, although it's gorgeous, it's also violent and crimson).  Music by Dog Fashion Disco. I seem to have a profound weakness for them.

Thanks to way2busymom and sisabet  for encouragement and criticism.

You can download an mp4 HERE

Notes: I challenged myself to present a triple POV: Will's, Hannibal's and their shared mind. I hope it worked.  Thanks for watching.

“Thoughts are nothing but cause and effect.”  -  Vaibhav Mukim, Logicops

I was in the middle of another vid and got exasperated. So, in order to work through it, I let my id out to play. I called this a LKBV, and I'm okay with it being one (since 90% of my vids are really, actually, truly LKBV's), but when I showed it to [personal profile] elynross , she didn't think it was one. Then, last night, in a last-ditch effort to get some sort of pre-release critique (heh), I showed it to [personal profile] sisabet  who didn't think it was one either.

To paraphrase Dr. Chilton, there's no word for what this is.

Will owns up, I guess. :)

Hannibal
My Type by Saint Motel

Hannibal doesn't really know what to do with all these feelings. Feelings about Will Graham.

Hannibal-grade gore.

Y'all, I really must have wanted to make this. I had to reinstall my OS three times before we figured out what was going on with my computer. My struggles to make this vid are likened to being wrapped in a straitjacket, held over a herd of pigs. This is, once again, all B's fault. She has instigated and egged me on since I was her captive driver to Vividcon. This is what comes of holding your friend hostage in Chicago traffic. Thank you, Belinda, for cheerleading and nitpicking!

New Vid - True Detective

Rust Cohle: Existentialist.
Music by Queens of the Stone Age.

This is kind of like proof of life. Unbetaed, so all mistakes are mine. Actually, all mistakes are always mine, but this time I can't even mention that someone else actually looked at this vid besides me. Comments and criticism are always desired. Thanks for watching!

There is a download available at my dropbox.

Festivids 2014 - The Red Shoes

My treat for [personal profile] absolutedestiny

The Red Shoes, music by VAST.

Download zipped divx file here.

I'd like give a hot-as-fire rec for [personal profile] rhoboat's Toxic vid for the same film. I think our two vids complemented each other, and her song choice and editing are both brilliant. Please go watch it (as if she needs any commercials from me!) and let her know how great it is.

New Vid! Beasts of the Southern Wild

This was my premiere vid at Vividcon this year. I can't really talk at length about it because most of my feelings about hurricanes, parents, and my own life are wrapped up inside Hushpuppy and her daddy, and I didn't expect how emotional I was going to be about it.  Anyway, even though I've always said that Too Drunk was my most autobiographical vid ever, this one probably overtook it.

Once again, there wasn't much in way of beta in this vid. [personal profile] elynross , my intrepid beta and understanding friend, made a few salient criticisms when I was constructing it, and I thank her.  My vids wouldn't be half as good without her eagle eye.

Thank you, [personal profile] absolutedestiny , for fixing the audio for me. Without your expertise, encoding would have literally stolen my thunder.

Thanks for watching! Commentary is always appreciated.

New Vid! Ancient Aliens

No, seriously. When I wrote to[personal profile] absolutedestiny  offering to vid Everybody Wang Chung Tonight to Ancient Aliens for Club Vivid, his answer was "Of course." And that's about it.

There wasn't much in the way of beta for this vid, but I'd still like to thank [personal profile] way2busymom ,[personal profile] elynross  and my usual gang of miscreants for suggestions, critique, mockery, and eyerolling. :)

New Vid! Person of Interest

Ahhh, the joys of a new fandom. The thrill of discovery, the drooling, the meta, the urge to vid it. All of the above. Finally, I can delve into all of this fic I have bookmarked, pinboarded, kindled. *Finally*

The most wonderful surprise about Person of Interest is that it is totally NOT what I thought it was. I thought it was a typical CBS-funded procedural about two guys who have a computer and fight crime, kinda like NCIS or CSI or any number of shows that bore me. But it's NOT! It's a fantasy-AU hiding behind the CBS old-folks eyeball. See, this show is about a probably-sentient machine, created during the post-9/11 panic, and the consequences that have sprung from its creation. The machine was designed, as Harold Finch tells us at the beginning of every episode, to catch terrorists before they have a chance to put their nefarious plans into action. However, even though it was designed to ferret out terrorist activity, The Machine sees everything, including everyday people who are in, or who will cause, dangerous activities. These issues are deemed irrelevant, but they're NOT, and something must be done, a moral imperative if you will, with this information. Hence, the good guys act upon it. The Machine spits out this information as it becomes available, and it's never been wrong.

Yet.

Anyway, I think The Machine is self-aware. I think she's in love with Harold Finch (her creator), and by extension, John Reese (the world-weary muscle of the operation). I also believe that there' s a ton of evidence in the show to back me up. I'm waiting with bated breath to see what happens when she announces that she's self-aware, when she becomes tired of being confined to a box, when Skynet happens! Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy my look at her from the inside.

Festivids Reveal - Deathproof

Yes, yes, I did. I made a Quentin Tarantino vid for suburbannoir this year. Deathproof was part two of his and Robert Rodriguez's homage to the grindhouse/drive-in movie exploitation films of the 70's, and I believe that this one holds up much better than the first half of the set, RR's Planet Terror. Quentin Tarantino movies also have an underlying hilarity to them, even the most serious ones, and Deathproof is no exception. Yes, it's gruesome and scary, and Stuntman Mike is the stuff of nightmares, but it was so over the top that I had to laugh.

I wasn't sure what suburbannoir wanted in this vid, so I went for what I wanted, which was to lay out the insane misogyny of Stuntman Mike and his receiving his just desserts. I hope it came through.

It's downloadable here at my dropbox.

After I had done the vid and uploaded it, I realized that I also made a QT vid last time I did Festivids. Maybe I'll start a trend!

Festivids 2013 - my vid! a vid for ME!

I've had company this weekend (yay way2busymom !! who has force-fed me Teen Wolf and the glories of the Blackhawks), so I haven't watched many vids yet; however, I have watched MY VID. THE VID THAT WAS MADE FOR ME. THAT ONE.

It's Ingenue, a vid for Cat People/Curse of the Cat People, an unlikely pair of films who are connected solely by title, producer, and cast, the first being the original Cat People, starring Simone Simon as a neurotic and lonely Frenchwoman whose inability to cope with her burgeoning sexuality manifests itself in transmogrifying into a cat (so to speak), and second being a fantasy fairytale about a little girl's lonely childhood. Curse of the Cat People has nary a monster in sight, other then the monstrosity of a child's isolation and her creative coping skills -- or utilization of a ghostly presence, if you will.

My festividder outdid him/herself. That's all I can say. I was stunned into silence on my first viewing and utterly thrilled on my second. You see, these two movies are so high on my list of beloved cinema that, before they were available on any sort of "keep it" media, I used to set my alarm to see them when they'd show up now and then on Pajama Drama or in the wee hours of the morning. I would miss school, be late to school, late to work, in order to see them. Curse of was one of the first movies I ever taped on my first VCR and one of the first DVDs I ever bought.

So, in these days of easy downloads and availability, consider that while you watch.

And to my festividder, as I commented to you earlier, this gift is perfection. Thank you, thank you.

That link again is right here: Ingenue

New Vid! Sherlock

I  seem to have this...thing about posting in the middle of the night, and vids are no exception. But y'all will have something to watch over coffee, right?

Happy Late Birthday, Liza!!

Okay, so the thing is, Liza asked me for this vid for her birthday back in September. I spent months fretting over making a Sherlock-and-John vid to Radiohead until she came home for Christmas, saw my 1:30 Timeline of Frustration and corrected me.

Liza:  Mom, this song isn't about Sherlock-and-John! It's about Sherlock-and-Moriarty!
Me:  Ohhhhhh....

After that pep talk, the vid went a little more smoothly.

Moriarty fucked him up, y'all.

Thank you, sisabet, fan_eunice , and aerynvala for your words of encouragement. This is officially un-betaed, so all presumptions and mistakes are mine.

Download is here. I still don't have my vid page back up yet, but hope springs eternal. :) All comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.

Signal Boost! Music Con Survey

Fandom is trying to create a music con, and there's a survey out there, asking what you would like to see/hear/involve yourself with during a music con.  This is the brainchild of [personal profile] cee_m & friends, and for a more detailed explanation, please go here.

If you don't need a more specific explanation, here's the link to the survey!

New Vid! Justified

This is for [personal profile] sisabet. God knows I've tried to pimp her into Justified using the usual enticements, but she has all of these so-called "valid" issues about the location and the accents. I sympathize. I haven't heard a good southern accent--a real southern accent that hasn't been Hollywood-bowdlerized--in ages. I've always maintained that best New Orleans accent on film is Dennis Quaid in The Big Easy, and when was that? 20 years ago? More? So, yes, [personal profile] sisabet, I hear you.

As far as the alleged location of Justified--allegedly, it's in and around Lexington, Kentucky, which is sisabet's old stomping grounds. My sympathies. Jackson doesn't look like O Brother Where Art Thou (too golden) OR  The Help (too green) OR A Time to Kill (too white) even though those movies were filmed within 10 miles of my house, and I met Samuel L. Jackson when he was playing pinball in the Park Place movie theater. So. I've offered her a solution--that Justified is set in Lexington, South Virginia, a state I just made up the other day. In Lexington, South Virginia, Raylan Givens can go to Louisville, Kentucky, in a manner of minutes. He can make it to the top of a mountain in the time it would take Mags Bennett to smoke a cigar, not to mention the honorary doctorates several of us have received from USV. For legitimacy's sake.

So, [personal profile] elynross, my lovely and supportive beta, thank you so much. Elyn points out my lack of logic when I'm wrong and eggs me on when I'm right. And thank you to [personal profile] kuwdora  for her unstinting rah-rahs while I was making this. It's always fun to have a friend watching the show with you and who is willing to squee and criticize. Yay!

Okay, shutting up now.

It's a Shame - 94mb (mp4 download)

ETA:  Dreamwidth actually ATE my edited post where I made this big 'splanation about how this vid sorta broke my record of being enamored with the hero of the piece. How irritating. huh. Maybe later.

Dear Festividder--

 Dear Festividder,

Happy holidays! Thank you so much for the awesome vid you're about to make for me, just for me. Stop it. I know you will. Stop! Really. It'll be great.

It's really difficult for me to get out of the "I'm the vidder" mindset, and to let myself actually want a vid that I'm not making myself. I hope, when you make this vid, that you'll want to make it as much as I want to have it.

As you can see, I'm pretty easygoing about the music. That's not that I don't have certain preferences, but I don't want to hogtie you in any way. I don't particularly care for a lot of auto-tune rap these days, but who's to say that you won't find the *perfect* piece of music down in that abyss, right? And I certainly am no expert on all of the stuff that's out there. That being said, I do have some marked preferences, musicwise, that include progressive/experimental/art/noise rock, classic 3-chord rock, world music, blues, jazz and classical. I'm also a sucker for great Americana. The only music I can't abide (seriously) is flat and out of tune music--and believe me, it's out there.

So let's talk about my requests!

1. Cat People/Curse of the Cat People. Two great tastes that taste, um, weird together! These two films only go together because of Simone Simon. Other than that, they really have nothing in common. That being said, I'd love to see you actually braid them together in some way beyond the actress. The original Cat People is, well, Cat People, the metaphor being the fear of and the (self) destructiveness of frustrated female sexuality. A dated idea, to be sure, and yet it's one that we deal with everyday. The Curse of the Cat People, on the other hand, is about the loneliness of childhood and how an active imagination can save your life. Also, it's very, very pretty. Apocrypha has it that Val Lewton couldn't get his fantasy made without calling it "Curse of..." Cat People is also the ur-film noir (trivia is my life). Go nuts.

2. Dead Ringers. My God, this movie freaked me the hell out back in the day. Twins don't scare me, but if they did, I'd blame Jeremy Irons. He should have gotten an Oscar for this instead of Reversal of Fortune, but that's another story for another day. Dead Ringers combines several of my irrational fears into one big Celebration of Creep: psychotic, misogynistic gynecologists who are into torture (Just thinking about their medieval surgical instrument collection makes my legs snap together); murderous sibling rivalry; inexplicable attraction to Genevieve Bujold; warm beige palette (aaaauuugghhh). It's all there. Wait a second. Twins *do* scare me. I just remembered The Shining. And Jack's Back. And Sisters. And that X-Files episode, Eve. Never mind. They totally *do* scare me.

3. Fallen. Let's talk about this movie being a sort of spiritual grandpa to Supernatural. It has all of the elements, some of them directly lifted and put into SPN's earliest mytharc--Azazel, transference of souls, bad stuff. Also, cats. That being said, it's the only movie with Denzel that I really like. Hell, you can throw Sam and Dean in there if you want! The sky's the limit. Fallen is a story about fate and futility, and when your number's up, your number's up. It's also a ghost story. There's a dreamy (okay, nightmarish) visual quality to a lot of Fallen that I love, as well. The film overuses "Time Is On My Side" by the Rolling Stones, but don't let that deter you. Everybody overuses the Rolling Stones.

4. Layer Cake, or "Lum finally notices Daniel Craig." This film looks like what Out of the Past would look like if it in color and filmed all over the UK and parts of Europe, and it's pretty much sunshine noir all the way around. "Layer Cake" is the vernacular for the social strata, and this is all about his climb to the top. I'm tempted to just say that if you know me, you'll know what I want from this, but chances are, you don't know me, and you don't know that I have a profound weakness for Daniel Craig. heh. I'd love to see a vid exploring the fallacy of "honor among thieves" or the (unsurprising) fate of someone who wades around in crap and thinks that he won't ultimately drown in it. Also, yeah, Daniel Craig. Did I mention Daniel Craig? (trivia: Tom Hardy's in here, too.)

5. Melancholia. This film rocked my world last year. It's stunningly gorgeous, and the two female leads are revelations. I haven't like Kirsten Dunst this much since Interview With the Vampire. I really can't say enough about this movie. Its tag says it all: A beautiful movie about the end of the world. It feels like two films in one, I like its take on Kirsten's character's battles with depression (and her sister, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) and how her depression lifts as the ultimate apocalypse approaches. She becomes almost heroic in her paralysis, and her acceptance of the end of all things is poetic. Make me something pretty. Make me forget who directed this.

6. Memento. Christopher Nolan has done some unforgivable things, IMO, but this is not one of them. My idea of a horror movie--a really scary horror movie--is this: you have no short-term memory, and you have to live and survive and get revenge and Trinity spits in your beer. If you haven't seen Memento, one hint about the movie is that the memories run in b/w and backwards, and the present day runs in color and forwards. Memento is kind of about time travel, albeit a different sort of time travel--it's more like, if Looper were only happening in your head. It's not a pretty movie. Make it pretty for me.

Thank you very much for the effort I know you're going to expend. Thank you for not giving up at 75% of done. Thank you for this lovely gift!

The thing is--

I understand this from *my* POV, the POV of a media fan who does creative work using digital media. I get the upset and inconvenience of losing a conduit to my media.

HOWEVER, from the other side? From the side of the governments of the world? There are more important things that need to be dealt with besides copyright infringement.

Maybe I didn't say it loudly enough, or maybe I just don't get it, but

THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS THAT NEED TO BE DEALT WITH BESIDES COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT OF A MOVIE OR A TV SHOW.

Wars, rumors of wars, unemployment, financial collapse of the world banks, people being thrust from their homes, diseases, famine and starvation, dictatorships, abuse of women, gender inequality, and those are just off the top of my head. Where does copyright infringement even come close? Why aren't the governments of this world concentrating on the important stuff and letting this lie till the rest of the crap is dealt with? Why do I even have to ask these questions?

Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

[NOTE: i live here. The amount of mis/disinformation being broadcast on MSM--when it's being discussed *at all*--is mindboggling.]

New Vid - Enter the Void

This is what I submitted for Club Vivid, so take some Ecstasy, grab some glow sticks, hug the person nearest to you, and groove sit back and enjoy! The film itself is Enter the Void, an interminable, hypnotic, much-too-long self indulgence by Gasper Noe.  Nevertheless, it's visually stunning, and if for no other reason than that, I'd suggest that y'all watch it. :) I pretty much made this video in my own little void, back in March or April, so I can't blame anyone but myself.  Thanks to the usual suspects for watching it in progress, and thanks to absolutedestiny  for putting it in Club Vivid! Download it at Eyecandy. Comments/criticism/whatthefuckwereyouthinking-ery always appreciated!

New Vid - Vertigo Motel (Breaking Bad)

So, yeah, it's Breaking Bad and me. Making this vid was therapeutic in a headbanging sort of way.

Thank you [personal profile] elynross for your encouragement and critical eye.  Thank you [personal profile] kuwdora  for pimping me into Breaking Bad.  Thank you Jaime and Chris for introducing me to Dog Fashion Disco. I'm a one-woman crusader for them.  At this point, I believe I've only vidded the Beatles more than DFD, with Unkle running a close third. :)

My premium account ran out the other day. Hey, I'm broke. I'm not working, and I am okay with not having 250 icons, etc., but do free accounts also prevent one from embedding/streaming video? I can't find anything about it in the FAQ.  Granted, I'm not the best looker-upper, but I searched and FAQ'ed and couldn't find anything.

The reason I ask is that all of my embedded vids are 404's.  I can get right to them, and if I open the edit screen, the embed codes are all still there.

Hell, the only reason I have this *fannish* account is to share my *fannish* stuff.

Anyone? Bueller? Because if I can't use DW (free version) for the very reason that I bought the time in the first place (fannish reasons), then I'm not going to use it, you know?

Also, happy birthday to me.

ETA: I wasn't begging or trying to sweet talk anyone into reupping my subscription to DW, and yet BANG! Thank you so much, anonymous gift giver. Now fess up so I can thank you loudly.  Also, happy birthday to me!!  *embarrassed*

ETA the Second: Y'all?  Someone needs to just remind me to get a grip. And maybe punch me in the face. I made a bad attitude all over the floor, and I'm sorry.  *scratches like kitten*

Obviously, I'm *on fire*... I'm experimenting. way2busymom says she can see my entire vidding past here, but I can't tell because I see my entire vidding past in every vid I do. sisabet tells me that my last bunch of vids have all been dreamscapes. Huh. Anyway, making this vid made me feel really good.

Streaming this vid has made me painfully aware of the limitations of youtube and viddler. *sigh*

Thank you elynross for your courage to get within 50 yards of my headspace these days and for noticing that this stuff isn't only pretty.

Oh, the things we could say about this vid. sisabet and I have been batting this song back and forth between ourselves since 2003, but never has a fandom fulfilled its obligation to the music like Supernatural has done-- to be overwrought, emo, pretty*, and oh-so-not-good-for-you. Other than that, it's late here in the Western Hemisphere, and maybe you'll see it in the morning, right?

While I'm at it, OMG maichan, thank you again so much for that glorious Big Fish vid. You made every man's life a fairytale. It made me cry. It made my husband get all teary. And laura! I quietly wondered if you may have made my Belle et Bete vid, but I just wasn't sure. There was an unsettling feeling of sexual curiosity throughout the film that you managed to distill beautifully in Arrivee'. Again, thank you both.

Non-conformist, Visionary, and Independent

Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which exists independently of  what may appear to others as visual realities.  Western had been underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality.  It allowed the progressive thinking artists to show a different side to the world around them.  By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a 'new kind of art' which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy.  Abstract artists created art that was diverse and reflected the social and intellectual turmoil in all areas of Western culture.

People that chose abstract art as their preferred artform tend to be visionaries.  They see things in the world around them and in people that others may miss because they look beyond what is visual only with the eye.  They rely on their inner thoughts and feelings in dealing with the world around them instead of on what they are told they should think and feel.  They feel freed from the tendancy to be bound by traditional thought and experiences.  They look more toward their own ideas and experiences than what they are told by their religious upbringing or from scientific evidence.  They tend to like to prove theories themselves instead of relying on the insight or ideas of others.  They are not bound by common and mundane, but like to travel and have new experiences.  They value intelligence, but they also enjoy a challenge.  They can be rather argumentative when they are being forced or feel as if they are being forced to conform.

Reminder from ladydevo

About creativity and how important one's personal creativity is to the world at large:

"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others"   -- Martha Graham
This is my premiere vid for this year's Vividcon. It's a transformative work distilled from the 1961 film, Last Year at Marienbad.

How I spent my winter/spring break, sorta

One night last fall, N and I were downing margaritas enjoying dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant. During one of our typical crazy conversations--something about, if Elvis played football, what position would he play--the guy sitting in the booth behind us joined our conversation. Over dinner, he discovered that I edited video, and I discovered that he was the front man for Storage 24, one of the most popular bands in Jackson.

Baby Phred and Storage 24 had just won the National MTV Battle of the Bands, and they just happened to have all of this footage that they shot for a video, but they didn't know anyone who could put it together. So, circumstances being what they were, I gave him a link to my stuff on Viddler and asked if he'd like to look at it and see if they could use me.

The next evening, Phred and his drummer Daniel showed up at my house with umpteen zillion gigs of raw footage.* We talked about video and movies and art and literature and their ideas for the vid. The next day, they emailed me a storyboard of sorts, and I got busy.

*Over the course of scrubbing thru the (literally) hundreds of gigs of footage, I discovered that the three linchpin images that they wanted in the video weren't even shot, so adjustments had to be made.

Phred came over a few times and dictated what they wanted. This was my major learning experience, that you do what the client wants even if you think it's not the best thing. I believe that making this video for them also proved to me that I didn't want to do video editing for a living--that I don't work well with other people telling me what to do artistically. heh.

Anyway, I finished it in March, sent it off to Phred and chalked it up to experience. I can't say that it was a bad experience; it was an intense and frustrating one, though, and I didn't start having a good time with it till I was about 75% done with it.

Last night, Storage 24 published the vid on their Youtube channel and on Facebook, so I guess I can publish it too, and here it is.

So, that's what I did. :)
